About your library

small logo

Welcome to the NPHS Library. You are now in Panther Territory!

The NPHS Library is designed to support the curriculum offered at Newbury Park High School. We have almost 20,000 print volumes covering all subject areas taught. This includes a large fiction section to support classroom assignments and recreational reading. Students can select reading and research materials from any of almost 40 magazine subscriptions. The library has also invested in several online subscriptions to assist our students in doing quality research. While in school, our students have available three computer labs for classwork or individual research. These computers feature many helpful applications including Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher. Our extended Homework Help hours give our students much needed access time to our facility to complete assignments and meet with their classmates.

Library Personnel Lucia Lemieux, the new NPHS librarian, comes to us from Los Cerritos Middle School, where she taught 8th grade Honors English and Social Science, advised the literary magazine and chaperoned the ski club. She previously taught English in the Health Science Academy at Moorpark High School., and taught poetry as a California Arts Council Artist-in-Residence at Weathersfield, Maple, Westlake Elementary, Lang Ranch and many other schools in the Conejo and Ventura County. One of her goals is to bring some interesting and fun programs to the library, and help NPHS students become involved in the NEA’s Poetry Out Loud Recitation contest. Lucia is a published poet and author, and has edited many poetry anthologies. She spent the summer editing On the Other Side of Tomorrow, the new statewide anthology of poetry published by the non-profit California Poets in the Schools. As a teacher, Lucia has won four IMPACT II awards for innovative curriculum, including the 2008 Superintendent’s Award for History (Almost) Alive, which incorporated visual and performing arts (VAPA) standards into the regular curriculum. Prior to teaching, Lucia worked at the Central Library as a PR Specialist/Film Liaison, and has also worked in television and film. She received her BA in Communications from Michigan State University, her MFA from the American Film Institute, and her teaching credentials from CSUN.

Judy Knauer is our library technician (IMT). She has been with the Conejo Valley Unified School District for 9 years. She was the librarian at Manzanita Elementary School for 5 years before transferring to Westlake High School where she worked for 4 years. She's thrilled to working at NPHS where her two sons attended, Andy, class of 2006, and Jack, class of 2008. Mrs. Knauer has lived in Newbury Park for 16 years and has volunteered in the community and schools in many different capacities. Mrs. Knauer loves working with teenagers and appreciates their keen sense of humor and willingness to learn.

Internet Acceptable Use Policy It has come to our school's attention that several of these "inappropriate" web sites have been accessed. Therefore, Internet access has been restricted before and after school. The Administration met to discuss this problem, and has come up with the following policy:

Overview
Electronic communications provide vast, diverse and unique resources. Our goal in providing this service to teachers, staff and ultimately students, is to promote educational excellence in the Conejo Valley Unified School District by facilitating resource sharing, innovation and communication.

With access to computers and people all over the world also comes the availability of material that may not be considered to be of educational value in the context of the school setting. There may be some material or individual communications which are not suitable for school-aged children. The Conejo Valley Unified School District views information gathered from the Internet in the same manner as reference materials identified by the schools. Specifically, the district supports resources that will enhance the learning environment with directed guidance from the faculty and staff. Exploration and manipulation of resources is encouraged. However, it is impossible to control all materials on a global network and industrious user may discover inappropriate information. The School District, cannot prevent the possibility that some users may access material that is not consistent with the educational mission, goals and policies of the school district, since Internet access may be obtained outside of the school setting.

Internet Guidelines
Internet access is coordinated through a complex association of government agencies and regional networks. The operation of the Internet relies heavily on the proper conduct of the users, who must adhere to strict guidelines. Internet access is a privilege, not a right.
