Press Release - 9.25.06:
U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings today named 250 schools as the first ones to be selected as 2006 No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence. AND ONE OF THESE SCHOOLS WAS NEWBURY PARK HIGH SCHOOL ! According to Spellings, schools like NPHS “show what wonderful accomplishments can be made when we focus on the bottom line in education – student achievement.”
NPHS was selected for this prestigious honor after first being named a California Distinguished School in 2004. As a school whose test scores were in the top 10% of all California High Schools, we were then nominated from California for the national award program. Nationwide (including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico ), a total of 413 can be nominated from the ranks of all public and private schools in the country.
An application was written by staff, and test data were compiled to forward to the US Dept. of Education last fall. The last step was to demonstrate we could maintain those high test scores in the testing of the spring of 2006, which we did handily!
An awards ceremony will be held in Washington , D.C. on November 9 th and 10 th . In addition, we look forward to receiving Board recognition shortly thereafter. We will also, of course, plan a schoolwide celebration for some time in November. Further details will follow, but – rest assured – we will CELEBRATE in true Panther style!
