Suspensions: The consequences to students who are involved in co-curricular activities at Newbury Park High School.
A
co-curricular activity is defined by the Conejo Unified School District as any
activity that requires a minimum 2.0 GPA to be a member. All athletics and
performing groups fall under this category (dance, drama, softball,
cheerleading, marching band, etc.)
The
one plus one policy defined:
For
every day that a student who is involved in co-curricular activities is
suspended from school, they will be suspended an additional equal number of days
from their specific co-curricular activity. For example: A student is suspended from school for three days; in
addition to the three days of school suspension, the student will be faced with
the further consequence of an additional three days of non-participation
in their co-curricular activity (hence “One plus One”). During the period of the school suspension, the student may
not be on school grounds or be affiliated with any school-sponsored events.
During the additional day(s) following the school suspension, the student may
not participate with his or her team/group in any capacity. (i.e., participate
in performances or competitions, participate in practices, attend team meetings,
sit on the team bench, etc.)
In
the event that a suspension occurs near or at the end of a particular
co-curricular activity (for example, the fall sports season or drama
performances) in which the total number of “suspended days” is more than the
total number of days left in the activity (including sports playoffs);
administration may elect to allow the student to serve the remaining athletic
suspension by selecting one of these two options:
1.
A carry-over to the next co-curricular activity in which the student
wishes to be involved. This would include non-participation in the first days of
practice for the specific co-curricular activity. Coaches and advisors will
consider a student serving these “extra” days of co-curricular suspension as
no-shows. For a student suspended in athletics, the first day of practice will
be dictated by the dates outlined in the CIF Bluebook)
or
2.
He or she
may complete community service at a rate of five hours per each day of the
remaining co-curricular suspension. The
dates, times and types of community service will be determined by a site
administrator.
Please note: Students who are involved in more than
one co-curricular activity at the same time will receive the above consequences
in all the co-curricular activities in which they are involved, however no
additional days will be assigned.
Why
implement the “One plus One” system?
Co-curricular activities on a Conejo Valley Unified School District campus are a privilege, not a right. Being selected to participate in theses activities and represent our school is an honor. Because of this, we believe that students involved in co-curricular activities are to be held to a higher standard since they represent our schools not only locally in the Conejo Valley but also in the other communities where they perform and compete.
Depending
upon the severity of the suspendable offense, a student/athlete may receive a
greater consequence than described herein. Please see the co-curricular code of
conduct.
